ASHTON WHALEY

Interior Design Journey + Airstream Renovation

Welcome & thank you for visiting my site! I'm Ashton, an Interior Design graduate from the University of Florida in Gainesville. Prior to pursuing a professional degree in Interior Design, I’ve always been intrigued by the built environment, and the impacts it can have on the people inhabiting it. I am passionate about creating spaces that will not only evoke a memorable experience, but also restore the connection between people and nature. On here, I have also added my husband & I's most recent project, a 1972 Airstream Sovereign. I love having the opportunity to share my passions and any renovation process that we have done that might be able to help even one person. Read on, and enjoy!

Finding Our Honey Home

Updated: Jan 28, 2020

You know those times when things just fall into place? When you've searched and searched and decide to give up.. and then God drops them right in front of you. Yeah, it was one of those kinda things.

After we decided we wanted full time travel starting the summer of 2019, we began the hunt of our home on wheels. We sold our old 23ft TrailLite and began the search for an Airsteam big enough to hold my rather large closet & our three fluff monsters.

We searched far & wide - scouring Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace from the Florida Keys to all of the SE US.. *insert crickets*and nothing. One night we went over to my grandparents (PoppaHoney & Grammy) to tell them about our plans for the future and hopes of finding an old Airstream to renovate. PoppaHoney explained that he thought he had saw one across from my parents' horse pasture that had been sitting for a long time. We were shocked. Since we were heading back home to Gainesville the next day, he offered to go over and talk to the neighbor to see if he was interested in selling it. Boy, were we in for it.

He called us back the next day and told us the length which was the exact size we had been looking for (31ft) and that it was absolutely disgusting inside and out, but no real damage or dents, just a few patches on top and one on the side - for a price that was truly out of this world. The neighbor had been using it as a storage unit and just wanted what he thought he could scrap it for since it was completely trashed inside with lots of leaks. We begged him to take our money then since it was such a good deal, but he insisted he find the title first before taking our money. Scared he would go online to see the real value of Airstreams, we checked in often until he cleaned out all of his junk and we had the title in hand. Below, I'll give you a glimpse into what Honey looked like the first time we went inside.

(note: I couldn't even walk to the back, so the pic of the bathroom you see is one similar to what ours looked like from SilverTwink7 on Airforums)

Our families were dumbfounded that we wanted something so disgusting and kept warning us of all the work we were in for, but we didn't care. We already had our mind set and were ready to the road running.
